●『大鑑慧能の禅』とは？という質問に応えて
『慧能大和尚の禅』について詳しく知りたい場合は『頓教最上大乘摩訶般若波羅蜜經六祖惠能大師於韶州大梵寺施法壇經（通称：壇経）』を通読された後、今・此処で貴方が出来るを完全にし切ることを奨めます。
とは言え、問われた以上は、記憶の限りで応えましょう。しかし、慧能大和尚の禅は“頭（我）”では無く“心（己）”であることは言うまでも無く、教外別伝・不立文字・直指人心・見性成仏の達磨大和尚の四聖句に見られる禅の肝の中の四句目にある“見性成仏”に力点が置かれているのが特徴と言えば特徴。
『見性成仏』を文字や言葉で語ることを拙僧としては躊躇いがあるものの、言ってみれば、仏教の常識。当たり前のこと。誰に聞いても異口同音で、活人禅らしい答えに困る。
つまり、『本来、此の世に現象している全てが公平、平等に埋蔵している“仏性（空に働く無一物の力）”に気付いた瞬間、己の内に埋蔵されている仏（無限の智慧）が萌芽し、即心菩薩となり、己（我ではない）とは即ち修行中の仏、菩薩であり、菩薩として、今・此処の己を素直に生きることこそ、己の外に何かを求める“我”ではなく、己の内の己（仏）を活かすこと。
されど、簡単すぎて難解な慧能大和尚の心を理解する上で大事の全ては、達磨大和尚の五代目にあたる『五祖・大満弘忍大和尚』が後継者を選ぶため、弟子に対し、「詩に表した『悟りの心境』を観て決めるぞ」という『不立文字』から発想すれば愚問であって難問の思い付きに始まった、秀才にして高弟の誉れ高き『神秀』と、愚鈍に映るような下働きをしていた『慧能』の境涯を表す、以下に掲げた二人の詩から“己自身で”学ぶことを奨める。
なお、ヒントとしては、慧能が弘忍大和尚の後継となって六祖になった後、周囲から囁かれたのが『神秀の漸修禅』、『慧能の頓悟禅』という有名な話を考えると良い。拙僧がそこから類推すれば、『神秀は左脳型の秀才、慧能は右脳型の天才』で、共に本来無一物の“凡才”から禅の修行により成長した“普通の人間”だということを導き出すだろう。さて、質問者は何を見出すか楽しみである。
付け足しになるが、禅宗において“祖”とつくのは六祖慧能が最後となるのは、その後は南方禅の慧能系、北方禅の神秀系に分かれたからである。
→先手を打った神秀の詩は以下の通り。
■神秀の詩
身是菩提樹 心如明鏡臺 （身はこれ菩提樹 心は明鏡台の如し）
時時勤佛拭 莫使有塵埃 （時時に勤めて佛拭し 塵埃を有らしめること莫れ）
→後手を打った慧能の詩は以下の通り。
■慧能の詩
菩提本無樹 明鏡亦無臺 （菩提に本から樹など無い 明鏡にもまた台など無い）
佛性常清淨 何處有塵埃 （仏性は常に清浄だ 何処に塵埃が有るのか）
心是菩提樹 身為明鏡臺 （心が菩提樹であり 身を明鏡台というのだ）
明鏡本清淨 何處染塵埃 （明鏡は本から清浄だ 何処が塵埃に染まるというのか）
★問う：二人の詩の提示順序が逆さであったら、五祖は如何にしたか。（内緒だが、活人禅の公案の一つ）、まあ、書いた以上は永久に封印だから予習の意味は無い。
応えは以上である。
