●禅は、事実を『みる』、『きく』ことが先ず第一。
先ず『みる』の文字は、拙僧が知る限り、誤解をさせるまいとして更なる誤解を生む可能性があるので、完全には使い分けてはいないが、『見 看 相 覯 覧 観 矚 眄 視 覗 診 睨 睹 監 覩 瞰 瞥・・・』。文書の師である塩小路光孚師（菅原道真公の３８代目）によれば１００以上はあるという。次に『きく』は、聞 聴 可 聆 訊 （利 効）、現代に於いては少々意味が異なる２字を加えても６文字。師に問えば「もっとある」という。確かに、話を“きく”、音を“きく”。人工音か自然音か。音源別なら無限にあるだろう。いずれにしても“分別”→“差別”に繋がる“有”の源泉であることは確か。それにしても、「みる」文字が「きく」文字より多いのは何故だろう。
『看話禅（臨済宗）』の修業に入ると、“初関”として与えられることが多いのが『無門関』第一則の「趙州狗子」。その本則に対する趙州の解説は懇切丁寧そのもので、無門禅師の解説も同様。その『無門関 第一則「趙州狗子」』は通称『“無字”の公案』といわれている。『室外持ち出し厳禁』の公案なので詳細は述べないが、『本則』は、「趙州ちなみに僧問う、狗子に還って仏性有りや、また無しや。州云わく、無」。意味は、趙州にある僧が「犬にも仏性があるでしょうか」と尋ねると、趙州は「無」と答えた。一切衆生悉有仏性 山川草木悉皆成仏、森羅万象は全て仏性そのもの」という根本思想からすれば“おやおや”の応えである。続いて、無門禅師の解説が、「無門曰く、参禅はすべからく祖師の関を透るべし。妙悟は心路を窮めて、絶せんことを要す。祖関透らず、心路絶せずんば、尽くこれ依草附木の精霊ならん」というもので、意味は「禅の実践は、先ず最初に「祖師の関」を透らなければならない。それから、悟りを得る道に踏み込み、己事究明を通じて“心”見窮め、夢想・妄想・煩悩から解放されることが肝要。祖師の関も透らず、夢幻や妄想に取
り付かれたまま、煩悩を滅する経験も無しに『禅』に取り組んでも無駄、中途半端は禅敵である」。「しばらく道え。如何なるかこれ祖師の関。ただこの一個の無字、すなわち宗門の一関なり。ついに之をなづけて禅宗無門関という」。「さて、祖師の関とは何か。それは、この一個の「無」字である。これが禅宗の第一の関門である。それを名付けて「禅宗無門関」という」というのが、「趙州狗子」の超超訳のである。
何故、臨済宗は『看話禅（かんなぜん）』なんだろう。何故に「話を看る」と書くのだろう。そして『無字の公案』なのだろう。捨てるには、“有無”の“有”の状態が無ければならないが、周知のように、無字の公案の“無”は“有無の無”ではなく、“有無の無では無い無”である。つまり、相対的な無では無く、絶対的な無。絶対的な無を観ようとする時に“相対的な無”が比較に出てくるのは絶対的では無い。「素粒子の姿を直接に観ることは出来ない」というのは先端科学の常識。有は無であり、無は有であるからだ。そんな事実は『般若心経』の肝である「色即是空 空即是色」とあるから、禅者であれば衆智。がしかし、本当に解って行動できていれば“初関”が全て。にも関わらず１７００の公案があり、４８０００の経がある。
■禅士に問う「禅では、何をみるか、きくか」

『生死事大・無常迅速・光陰可惜・時不待人』
『衆生無辺誓願度 煩悩無尽誓願断 法門無量誓願学 仏道無上誓願成』
願わくは、この功徳を以って普く一切に及ぼし、我らと衆生と皆ともに、仏道を成ぜんことを
